In recent months, change in the legal environment has occurred at an unexpected pace due to new enactments in the law. In an amendment to Japan’s criminal procedure law enacted in May 2016, a plea agreement system whereby prosecutors are able to resolve a case in accordance with a plea agreement reached between the accused and the prosecutor was introduced.
